Roche' concentrates on samba songs and light Latin pieces.She
employs two highly rhythmic trios to support her efforts - one
showcasing guitarist Lubambo and the other headed by pianist Ridl.
The groups alternate on the program that features a mixture of
original material and songs by noted composers such as A.C. Jobim
and Luis Bonfa. Roche' is a swinging singer who uses her soprano
voice to traipse lightly over the Latin beat, which is added to
most of the songs. She dabbles with scatting as well, splicing
vocalese into the
beat on several tunes. On one Jobim tune, she adds a bit of authenticity
by singing in Portuguese. Roche's straight ballad approach as
exhibited on 'The Shadow of Your Smile' is a deviation yet displays
her lovely voice with striking clarity. The songs with the guitar
trio are enhanced greatly through the playing of Lubambo. He has
the essence of samba in his blood, and his playing sways in loving
response to this infectious music. Bassist Huff and drummer Miller
are in synch, making the journey to Brazil very enjoyable. Miller's
double time rhythm on 'No More Blues' captures the spirit of Rio
and the samba schools very nicely. When the piano trio backs Roche'
the beat is still of Latin America but not necessarily of Brazil.
These tunes have a more generic Latin flavor with influences of
the blues and popular music embedded within.Ridl's solos are moderately
percussive, putting oomph behind the alreadyenergetic movement
of the singer. Roche' is a commendable vocalist."

Gina Roché and her Trio are set to sizzle the Monday Night Jazz & Blues Series at the Alton Auditorium at the Richard Stockton State College, on Monday, November 29th, 2010
Show time is 7:30 p.m. Tickets are priced at $15 and may be ordered online at www.stockton.edu/pac or by calling the Box Office at (609) 652-9000. The Box Office is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and an hour and a half before the performance.

Workshop in Jazz is an evening of live music created with the intention of providing artists an opportunity to rehearse and perform new compositions. In addition, it will give the artist an opportunity to talk about their music and musical concepts, while giving listeners the opportunity to observe the rehearsal process and ask the artists questions. Each week,bassist Tim Lekan and drummer Bob Shomo will accompany the featured artists. Joining the group this evening will be Barry Sames on piano.
